10K Islands Music Mix Volume II - Memorial Day

We're back with another mix. Last edition was for SXSW and caused a lot of bands to get signed to lucrative major label record deals with large cash signing bonuses and complete artistic control on all future projects. Now we've got one for a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend. Summer is here which means pig roasts, clam bakes, crab boils, icing bros, oyster/champagne parties, BBQ's etc.

No Age Fight It Out In Lisbon

No Age are in Lisbon Portugal. Drummer extraordinaire Dean Spunt and some members of the No Age touring party got 'jumped' by some bouncers at a club. More info at their personal blog.

I Can't Hear You

Great article from The New York Times regarding sound quality of music today. The effects of technology and ease of procurement versus creating a listening experience.

Plains is considering releasing an alternate version of the debut album (coming this summer!) availble in 5.1, could be dope surround sound experience.

Interpol Finish Album - Carlos D Leaves

Interpol has finished the new album - good news.
Carlos D has left the band - bad news.

He has stellar facial hair and some great bass lines.
Info comes from Interpol's official site.

Crystal Castles Rush Release New Album

Crystal Castles will be rush releasing their sophomore album (via NME). Originally slated for a June release, the disc will see digital daylight this Friday April 23rd due to an early online leak. Great move in my opinion, something MGMT (the band) thought about doing, but MGMT (management/record label) fought against. See what I did there? Play on the word management... Good stuff.

They kind of look like birds.

The Dirty Side Of The Music Business - Interns

Almost as riveting as our Surfer Blood Vs. Joy Division story, the NY Times did some actual research and interviews for a great piece on

The Unpaid Intern, Legal Or Not.

Pretty much everyone I know in the music industry started out as an intern.

If you're not born into it, you gotta work/grind for it. Music Business school is helpful, but it seems that you can get more experience, as much networking and spend less dinero interning.

I myself started interning at a booking agency during college and in my first week I dropped a $250,000.00 check for a not-so-great Canadian band behind the copy machine. I spent 20 minutes leaning on the copy machine...learning names, acting cool, a lot of pointing at people walking by and poking behind the copy machine with my feet.

I found it.

Surfer Blood Vs. Joy Division

Being a South Florida label/blog, we LOVE Surfer Blood. In fact, ANR is playing with Surfer Blood in in a couple weeks in Bal Harbour. John Hancock of ANR is such a big Surfer Blood fan that he has been wearing their t-shirt around the studio. Every time I see it I can't help but think that I've seen that image somewhere else. Am I crazy or is this Astro Coast t-shirt 99% the same as Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album art???
The pulses from Unknown Pleasures are transformed into waves...
for surfing...
I get it now.

 Above: Surfer Blood.

Below: Joy Division.

Kind of paying homage to Joy Division, kind of too similar?

More on the Joy Division cover art available at Wikipedia.

Plains - "Innovator" Video

Thanks to Transparent Blog for a mention of Plains and the "Innovator" video!

We think it's a good one as well.

Lollapalooza Line Up Announced

And it is a good one. Check it out over at the Lollapalooza website. The Line Up features: The Strokes, Phoenix, The National, Jimmy Cliff, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and a bunch of others!

This, along with the Pitchfork joint, is turning Chicago into Festival City USA.

Sonar Announces Lineup - LCD Soundsystem

Sonar Festival in Barcelona Spain has announced its lineup. Pretty stellar, dance party. I am looking into flights and commercial water vessels. Neither are cheap. The festival will look something like this, but a thousand times bigger:

Vampire Weekend Is Gay

And by that, I mean that keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij is gay and talked about it recently with OUT magazine.

Here is a video of Vampire Weekend at Coachella 2 years ago.

They will be back there. Again. This year.

"You built a time machine...Out of a Delorean?!?!?!"

Raaaaaaaandy!

Along with 9.2's today, Pitchfork has also shed some light on the Aziz Ansari (future 'best new music') mixtape. With an MP3.

Yes.

MF Doom

The MF Doom live controversy is heating up again.

Brooklyn Vegan has the scoop.

Mos Def is Doom's biggest fan. Next to the guy (maybe) pretending to be him at live shows.

Studio

I was asked a questions yesterday:

"Hey fella, what does Awesome New Republic look like in the studio?"

I replied with the visual rant seen above.
